South India Tour Package Guide: Temples, Hills & Backwaters

South India packs an unusual amount of variety into a relatively small area — ancient temple towns, cool hill stations, and quiet backwaters are often just a few hours’ drive apart. Starting a tour from Madurai puts you within easy reach of all three.

Temples

Madurai itself is home to the Meenakshi Amman Temple, one of South India’s most significant temple complexes, and makes a natural base for a temple-focused leg of the trip. Rameshwaram, with the Ramanathaswamy Temple, is a common addition for a pilgrimage-style itinerary.

Hills

Kodaikanal is the closest hill station to Madurai, while Munnar and Thekkady in Kerala are a bit further but well worth the drive for tea estates, spice gardens, and cooler weather.

Backwaters

A backwater stretch, usually added on toward Kerala, is a good way to slow the pace down after temple visits and hill drives — houseboat stays are a popular way to experience it.

Putting it together

A full South India circuit combining temples, hills and backwaters usually works best over 5 to 7 days, though shorter versions focusing on just one or two of these are easy to arrange. Our South India Heritage & Pilgrimage Tour covers much of this ground, or browse all our tour packages and contact us to put together a custom plan.
